What are peptides?

Peptides are short chains of amino acids linked by peptide bonds — basically small pieces of protein. Usually the term covers chains from a couple amino acids up to around 50; longer chains are called proteins.

A few things worth knowing:

  • Structure: Peptides are chains of amino acids linked together through peptide bonds formed between amino acids. Depending on their sequence and molecular structure, peptides may exist as linear chains or may contain more complex structural features such as loops or branching.
  • Biological Role: Peptides occur throughout biological systems and participate in a wide range of molecular processes. Their structures and interactions make them useful subjects for laboratory research involving molecular characterization, biochemical analysis, receptor interactions, signaling pathways, and related experimental systems.
  • Research Applications: Peptides are widely studied in laboratory and analytical research. Research involving peptides may include investigations of molecular structure, peptide synthesis and characterization, biochemical interactions, analytical methods, and other experimental applications.
